ITALIAN PAINTED BOOK COVERS.] "Cenni Storici sul Ponte Sanguinario ed altri monumenti di Spoleto." Italy, ca 1850. 314 x 220 mm. MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER, 56 leaves, two engraved plates, one folding watercolor drawing at end of the "Porta Urbana a Settentrione." 19th-century red velvet, sides with an octagonal sunken panel enclosing a gouache painting on paper, brass ornamentation on outer border and spine, blue paper endleaves with elaborate embossed gilt-paper ornamentation. Provenance : purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 15 July 1958. A SPLENDIDLY ILLUSTRATED BINDING, reflective of the volume's contents which discuss the monuments in and around Spoleto. Each cover has a different image relating to the Spoleto landscape and incorporating allegorical and heraldic details. The Ponte Sanguinario ("bloody bridge") was built by the Romans in the 1st Century BC. The name is traditionally attributed to the persecutions of Christians in the nearby amphiteatre.
