Type: 1:100G. 2-4-line initials, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red, one initial in blue with red, green and yellow decoration, first page ruled in red. (Small hole affecting a few letters on 3/7, a few very light stains or soiling, small marginal wormholes in first 2 leaves repaired, final leaf mounted.) Late 18th-century brown russia over pastepaper boards, gilt, gilt armorial device of M. Wodhull at centre of front cover, (extremities rubbed), gilt spine, marbled endpapers. Provenance : contemporary inscription erased from first leaf, and marginal annotations in an early hand; Michael Wodhull (1740-1816), with his notes dated 15 June 1799 on front flyleaf, purchased at Leigh's auction; Mount Stuart bookplate. An early edition of this extremely popular compendium of saints' lives, with additional lives not by Jacobus de Voragine, although commonly ascribed to him.
