Gothic types 1:160 (title, headings), 2:91 (text), 3:91 (smaller headings). 47 lines and headline, double column. Initial supplied in red. CAMBRIDGE BINDING: contemporary blind-stamped calf over wooden boards, by the binder W.G., intersecting triple fillets dividing the covers, the center panel diapered, border of repeated foliate tool, the compartments containing flower, fleuron, rosette and fleur-de-lis tools, gilt lettering piece of later date on spine (one corner defective, clasps gone, joints and spine-ends repaired, later endpapers). Quarter-morocco box. Provenance : contemporary English ownership (other than the binding, any evidence disappeared with the original endpapers) -- [H.P. Kraus (1953 collation mark)] -- purchased from John Grant Edinburgh, 14 September 1982. The "Golden Legend" was extremely popular in the late Middle Ages, not only on the Continent but also in Britain. Caxton printed an illustrated edition of his own translation of a much enlarged text in 1483, reprinted by his successor Wynkyn de Worde Through 1527 a total of eight editions were published in England. But for the original Latin texts English readers had to turn abroad; thus, a number of copies of Continental editions with early English provenance are recorded. The Cambridge shop responsible for this binding is only known by the initials W.G., which appear on a roll (not employed here). Three of the present tools are reproduced in J.B.
