Beschreibung:

Jane Erin Emmet de Glehn American, 1873-1961 The White Villa, 1934 Signed Jane de Glehn and dated 1934 (lr), inscribed as titled on the reverse Oil on board 18 1/8 x 23 7/8 inches (46 x 60.6 cm) Provenance: Private collection, London Private collection, London Exhibited: Royal Academy, London, 1935, no. 513 Jane Emmet, the youngest of the three Emmet artist-sisters, studied at the Art Students League in New York before traveling through Europe, where she furthered her training in Parisian ateliers. At age seventeen, she and her sisters met and befriended John Singer Sargent After her marriage in 1904 to the British artist Wilfrid De Glehn, she and her husband traveled often with Sargent, painting with him in Italy and Greece. Here, using a Sargentesque fluidity, de Glehn captured the patterns of light and shadow cast on the white walls of a Mediterranean villa ensconced in flowering vines and shrubs. Standing in the shadows, a young woman in Grecian-inspired drapery plays the role of a classical sculpture. Her presence suggests the way in which the de Glehns seamlessly intermixed life and art. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
Dirty varnish, frame rubbing, resulting in some small losses along the bottom edge. Pinhole in upper left and right corners. No apparent restoration; however, there are a few spots of pinkish pigment in the woman's face and neck which fluoresces slightly under UV light.
