Sutherland and others after Thomas Whitcombe (1760-1824), two uncoloured etched illustrations. (Without the two portraits and list of subscribers, title thumb-soiled, some soiling of plate and text margins, occasionally heavy, soiling on the plate of the 'Capture of the Liguria' affecting small part of image.) Contemporary straight-grained green morocco elaborately decorated in gilt and blind, gilt edges (rubbed, corners bumped, stains on front cover, upper joints slightly cracked). LARGE PAPER COPY IN 'THE FIRST AND BEST STATE' of Jenkins's unique documentary record of naval engagements, with the coloured plates on India paper and in etched outline, and the title vignette uncoloured. Abbey notes that the plates 'are far superior in the quality of colouring than when printed direct on the Whatman paper. The general effect is of higher quality, yet the use of India paper for coloured aquatints at this period is very uncommon' (Abbey). It remained a highly popular work, Tooley finding that 'the plates were reprinted without any alteration in imprints certainly up to 1835.' Tooley also notes that the two portraits were additional plates and 'the work is complete without them.' Abbey Life 337; Tooley 282.
