FIRST EDITION of a study originally meant to accompany the official account of Cook's second voyage and a companion volume to his son Georg's 1777 book on that voyage (see previousl lot). It specifically elaborates their scientific work on the voyage, including speculation on the nature of the Antarctic Sea, and relates their comparative ethnographic observations and findings, particularly in the South Seas. This can be classed, then, as a pioneering work in the field of Anthropology. An 8-page log of Resolution 's voyage prefaces the work and a long section on the preservation of health at sea, and preservation of sailors' health ashore, concludes the work, including the suggestions of James Lind whose work on scurvy was published in 1753.
