Beschreibung:

.577 caliber. 39" round barrel secured by three clamping bands. SN: NSN. Blued and color casehardened finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Lock marked with a {Spread-Winged Eagle} over a {Shield with an M} in it at the tail and dated 1863 forward of the hammer. Breech with Birmingham view, provisional and definitive proof marks, as well as a pair of 25 gauge marks indicating .577 caliber. Patten 1853 Enfield style ladder rear sight, musket style front sight/bayonet lug. Retains both sling swivels, the "doughnut" style screw protectors on the barrel band tension screws and a full-length Enfield jag-head style ramrod with good threads at the end. One of the American-made "Enfields" by J.P. Moore of New York. While Hill & Anthony erroneously listed these "M Rifles" as Confederate, more recent scholarship has determined that they were American made, using some imported British parts, particularly barrels. For any Civil War collector this is a very interesting and somewhat uncommon rifle musket that would be one of the three necessary to complete an "American Enfield" collection. Such a collection would also include the Robbins & Lawrence "Windsor" rifle muskets and the Orison Blunt made Enfields. A particularly fine condition example that would be difficult to upgrade. Condition: Fine. Retains some nice thinning blue which has mixed with plum patina making the gun appear to have more finish than it does. Lock with a mottled brown and gray patina and minute hints of coloring. Markings clear and crips throughout. Mechanically functional, very good bore with strong rifling and scattered oxidation with some light pitting. Brass with an attractive dark patina. Wood very crisp with som nice feathery texture to the grain, showing only some scattered light handling marks, minor dings and mars.
