London: Printed at the Expence of the Society for the Encouragement of Learning...[for] A. Miller, J. Nourse & J. Gray 1738.
KEITH, Sir William (1669-1749). The History of the British Plantations in America...Part I [all published]. Containing the History of Virginia; with Remarks on the Trade and Commerce of that Colony. London: Printed at the Expence of the Society for the Encouragement of Learning...[for] A. Miller, J. Nourse & J. Gray 1738. 4 o (234 x 197 mm). Engraved title vignette, repeated on final page, 2 engraved folding maps (first map with very slight fold tear). Contemporary half calf and boards (spine worn, but cords sound). FIRST EDITION. A remarkably tall and clean copy of this rare work and the only volume published in a projected series. The first map "A New and Correct Map of America" (560 x 475 mm), shows North and South America (California as an island) with inset views of Port Royal, Boston, Georgia, North Pole and a Newfoundland cod fishery; the second "A New Map of Virginia" by Thomas Fairfax dated 1738 shows, Virginia and North to New Jersey and South to North Carolina. "Based largely on Beverley's history" (Howes), but there is a great deal of original material, particularly in relation to trade and commerce. "The author was Governor of Pennsylvania from 1717 to 1726, and had previously been Surveyor of the Customs... Jefferson, in his 'Notes on Virginia,' says it is 'agreeable enough,' but passes over points of importance" (Sabin).
