Gray 1738. 4to, contemporary calf gilt, rebacked, corners restored, first map with very slight fold tear, text with fairly heavy spotting . FIRST EDITION, engraved vignette on title, repeated on final page, 2 folding engraved maps; the first, "A New and Correct Map of America," 560 x 475 mm. (21 7/8 x 18 1/2 in.) showing North and South America with inset views of Port Royal, Boston, Georgia, North Pole and a Newfoundland cod fishery; the second, of Virginia and North to New Jersey and South to North Carolina. "Based largely on Beverley's history "-- Howes K 36; Sabin 37240 Provenance : The Society of Writers to the Signet, gilt supra libros and shelf labels (sale, Sotheby's, 27 June 1960, lot 1725).
