Beschreibung:

LABORDE, Léon-Emmanuel-Simon-Joseph de. Voyage de la Syrie par Messieurs Alexandre de Laborde Becker, Hall, et Léon de Laborde . Paris: Firmin Didot Frères, 1837 [-45?]. Large 2° (600 x 430mm.). Half-title, lithographic title with vignette of the ruins of Palmyra, 88 tinted lithographic plates after Laborde, Roberts and others, one printed in colours, several partly coloured in red and blue, historiated tinted woodcut initial and border by Fragonard decorating the first leaf of the introduction. (Some staining and spotting.) Contemporary red morocco, gilt, covers with broad dentelle borders incorporating floral and pineapple tools, spine gilt in seven sections decorated with thistle motifs, blue morocco lettering pieces, gilt inner dentelles, g.e. A FINE COPY of Laborde's rare work of his travels through Syria, the Holy Land and the Levant. The plate list is numbered to 89 but plate 77 is omitted, the 88 plates comprising 194 views including many of the Holy Land after David Roberts The parts for this work were issued together with the companion work Voyage de l'Asie Mineure under the general title Voyage en Orient from 1838, and according to the British Library, part 39 had been completed by 1845. Brunet, however, states that only 36 had been issued by 1861. The complications of the issue of the two works together meant that subscribers were presumably supposed to divide the parts into the relevant works, and subsequently, complete copies of both works are very rare. Not in Blackmer or Abbey; Brunet III.714.
