American (Kentucky), 1790. Gouache on ivory. A pair of oval portrait miniatures of a couple, Gerard Banks and Sarah Strother Banks. The sitters are identified and the miniatures dated 1790 in etched inscriptions on the reverse of each frame; 2 x 2.5 in. (frame of larger). These miniatures are referenced in the William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Volume 5, p. 212 (1897). A genealogical note about Adam Banks references a pair of "miniatures in gold" belonging to Mrs. Emma Banks Richards, the sitters identified as Girard [sic] and Sarah Strother Banks and dated 1790. Provenance:Property from the Americana Collection of Dr. Dale and Ann Knight Gutman, Cincinnati, Ohio Condition: Vertical crack to the woman's portrait. Glue residue on reverse of each frame.
