Le Dodici fatiche di Hercole . Florence: 'Sotto il Corridore di Sua Altezza', 1576. 4° (198 x 138mm). Large woodcut figure of Hercules on title, repeated on last page, 15 half-page woodcuts, including one repeat, woodcut historiated initials. (Some staining, small wormtrack in first quire affecting a few letters, two lines shaved.) Burgundy morocco janseniste by René Assourd, slipcase. Provenance : Baron Horace de Landau (1885 catalogue, I, p.374, no. 12 in a Sammelband; presumably the same copy, later bound separately in red morocco, in the Landau sale at Hoepli/Kundig, Geneva, June 1948, lot 29) -- Fort Hill (bookplate) -- Leonard and Lisa Baskin (signature at end) -- Dr. Otto-Schäfer-Stiftung, e.V. (OS monogram stamp). APPARENTLY UNIQUE COPY of a heroic poem in ottava rima on the labours of Hercules. It is one of five editions -- all rare and all printed in Florence, only two of which are dated (1568 and 1576). Sander's description derived from the Landau copy. The woodcuts had appeared in the 1568 edition with one substitution (Sander illus. 626 does not appear here), but are independent from the 'alle Scalee di Badia' edition of c.1560 (Sander 3364). Sander 3368; and cf. Mortimer, Harvard Italian , for two other editions.
