MARY LINCOLN'S LAST DAY IN THE WHITE HOUSE An especially poignant letter from the bereaved first lady, written on the eve of her final departure from the White House, a little over a month after the death of Abraham Lincoln: "My Dear Madame Berghmans; We leave here, tomorrow evening, yet I do not feel as if I could do so, without bidding you farewell. I go hence, a broken hearted woman, without my beloved Husband, who was every thing to me. I do not have the least desire to live." "To think, that my poor boys, are alone left to me! If you can visit me tomorrow about three o'clock. It will be a satisfaction to see you once more. Only my extreme agony of mind, has prevented my receiving yourself & other friends. God alone knows the agony of this crushed heart. Ever affectionately yours. Mary Lincoln." Recently discovered in the papers of the recipient's descendants in Europe; not in J.G. Turner & L.L. Turner, Mary Lincoln: Her Life and Letters, and hitherto unpublished.
