Beschreibung:

Lot consists of: (A) Third Reich Kriegsmarine trapunto commemorating a sailor's world cruise. This embroidery was most likely made in Japan or China as a souvenir for the sailor. The trapunto banner is constructed of beautiful silk floss and metallic thread that is embroidered on a blue silk field. The words "Zur Erinnerung An Meine Welt Reise" (In memory of my world trip) are embroidered across the top above a German Eagle that is holding a photograph of the sailor between its talons. The photo is flanked by 16 flags, eight on each side, and a dragon in clouds circles underneath the photo above an embroidery of the ship, the German cruiser Köln. The dates "1932" and "1933" are above the cruiser which is most likely the period this embroidery dates to. The Koln would go on to serve throughout World War II, and was sunk by American aircraft on March 3, 1945. The sailor's name "Willy Reichardt" is embroidered at the bottom below the ship. CONDITION: The colors remain strong and vibrant. The thick designs remain intact with no signs of loose threads. Some blemishes on the blue field. Frame remains sturdy. Overall very good. (B) Imperial German naval trapunto commemorating a sailor's Pacific cruise. This embroidery was most likely made in Japan or China as a souvenir for the sailor. The trapunto banner is constructed of beautiful silk floss and metallic thread that is embroidered on an off-white silk field. The words "Zur Erinnerung An Meine Dienstzeit / Vom Fels Zum meer" (As a reminder of my service time / from the rock / To the sea) are embroidered across the top above a crown and Imperial Eagle and anchor that is flanked by a variety of ensigns including German, British, Italian, Japanese, American, Austro-Hungarian, and Chinese flags. Below the eagle is the sailor's name "M. Artl. Wihsen." along with "Deutsch" and "China" on either side. Towards the bottom is a nice small embroidery of the salior's ship, the SS Crefeld. The Crefeld would serve through World War I and would later run aground in 1932 at Punta Oscura. CONDITION: The colors remain strong and vibrant. The thick designs remain intact with no signs of loose threads. Some scattered staining on the white field, especially at the bottom. The frame remains sturdy. Overall good.
