"Macrobius' lengthy excurses on Pythagorean number lore, cosmography, world geography, and the harmony of the spheres established him as one of the leading popularizers of science in the Latin West... Macrobius and Martianus Capella were largely responsible for preserving Crates of Mallos' theory of an equatorial and meridional ocean dividing the earth into four quarters, each of which was assumed to be inhabited" (DSB IX, 1). Berühmt ist das Werk vor allem durch die darin enthaltene Weltkarte im Rund auf Bl. 30r. Von dieser erstmals Brescia 1483 gedruckten Karte existieren 4 Varianten, von denen vorliegende die letzte ist. - Teilw. etwas gebräunt u. fleckig bzw. fingerfleckig, Titel stärker fingerfleckig u. mit altem Stempel. Geringe Wurmspuren im unteren Bund und weißen Rand, letzte 2 Bll. auch im oberen Text. Die ersten Bll. im unteren Teil gelockert, Bl. 77 mit Farbverwischung. Sixth and last incunable edition, with half-page woodcut map of the world (Shirley 13, block 4) and 7 woodcut diagrams in text. "Includes... a geographic concept which is different from that of Ptolemy" (Shirley). - Some browning and spotting or thumbing, heavier to title. Slight worming to lower blank margin, minor to text of last two leaves. First leaves somewhat loose, inkstain to leaf 77, old stamp to title. Half vellum around 1900.
