London: William Bowyer for Christopher Bateman, 1st September 1717. 8 o (219 x 130 mm), 2 volumes bound in one. 2 engraved plates of early printers' devices, woodcut head- and tail-pieces. French green morocco gilt of the third quarter of the 18th century, triple fillets on sides, spine decorated in compartments, roll-tooled border on turn-ins, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, (slight wear at corners). Provenance : Louis-Léon-Félicité, comte de Lauraguais, subsequently duc de Brancas (engraved armorial bookplate, Debure sale 11th June 1770, lot 770) -- Antoine-Augustin Renouard (name lettered at foot of front cover, gilt red morocco booklabel, inscription dated 1784) -- Baron Jérôme Pichon (bookplate, sale Paris 3-14 May 1897) -- Maurice Escoffier (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of the earliest historical and bibliographical monograph on 16th-century Parisian typography, specifically the lives and work of Simon de Colines, Adrien Turnèbe, Michel Vascosan, the Morel clan, and Jean Bienné. FINE ASSOCIATION COPY from four distinguished collections with important holdings of French Renaissance printing. Bigmore & Wyman II, 14.
