Beschreibung:

Manufacturer: Rookwood Artist: Maria Longworth Nichols Description: Monumental 1883 Rookwood Limoges style vase, no doubt the work of Maria Longworth Nichols having three panels separated by diagonal lines showing dragons in two panels and a lonely pelican in the third. An area circling the rim and the diagonal panels are augmented with Fanny Auckland nail head stampings, all covered in fired on gold. In one panel, a single dragon appears while in an adjacent panel, two rather ominous dragons eye each other. The poor pelican sits between, perhaps hoping to be someplace else. Impressed marks include Rookwood in block letters, the date and a small kiln mark. The vase is not artist signed but as we have stated before, only the best artists were allowed to work on large pieces and only the boss was allowed to not sign pieces: her style speaks for itself. Height 20 1/8 inches. There is faint overall crazing and professional restoration to descending lines in the neck of the vase which intersected at the juncture of neck and body.
