Beschreibung:

3rd Indiana Vols. 4pp, 7.5 x 9.5 in., 23 April 1847, Camp Brown. Writing to his sister in New Richmond, Clermont County, Ohio. He describes camp life noting that they were in good health at the time, but there were outbreaks of smallpox in Monterey and Saltillo. He notes that: Gen. Wood is very severe on the volunteers. He is a very cautious, ingenious, and perservering commander. Taylor is a good deal like Old Hickory in our drills, camp and fatigue duties.... we take great pride in making a good appearance and having our arms in good order the 3rd regiment Ohio has the name of the best drillers and the most military appearance our regiment came in next. Then later in the letter: We have our camp looking beautiful, before every tent are small pine trees. And the usual: ...we are in our tents reading the letters and papers of those who are kind enough to send these and which I wish you to continue. Condition: Heavy toning, some separation of folds. Somewhat more fragile than the usual mid-19th century soldier's letter.
