Michael Deas "Abraham Lincoln" oil on panel
President on a General George McClellan autograph letter signed. One page, 5"H by 7.75"W (sight size), Headquarters, Army of the Potomac, Washington, D.C., September 15, 1861. In the letter, McClellan states "If General Cooper's request can be complied with, it would be gratifying to me" signed, "Maj Genl Geo. B. McClellan." President Lincoln wrote and signed an addendum, "And to me, A. Lincoln." The letter was written at a critical point in the Civil War. Just eight weeks earlier, Union Forces performed poorly at the Battle of Bull Run (First Battle of Manassas) and there were fears that Confederate Forces would advance on Washington, D.C.. Lincoln named General George McClellan as commander of the Army of the Potomac guarding the capitol. Within six weeks, Lincoln would give McClellan overall command of all Union Forces. The cordial feelings between Lincoln and McClellan were soon replaced with hostility due to the general's caution and lack of action, leading to McClellan's dismissal. In 1864, McClellan ran against Lincoln for the presidency. Matted and framed to an overall size of 23"H by 29"W. Framed with two cartes de visite, one of President Lincoln with a Gardner back stamp, the other of General McClellan and three staff officers with an E. A. Anthony back stamp. PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Dallas, TX.
