MONROE, James (1758-1831). President . Autograph letter signed ("Jas. Monroe") to Major Benjamin Day, Richmond, VA., 30 November 1787. 1 page, 4to, with an impression of Monroe's seal in orange wax on verso, some browning, damage to corners where previously attached . AN EARLY MONROE LETTER WRITTEN IN THE YEAR OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION. A rare, early letter of James Monroe concerning a petition presented by Benjamin Day. Initiating a successful law practise in Virginia one year after leaving the Continental Congress, Monroe was yet to achieve the notoriety that would lift him to the Presidency. Two months after the adjournment of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Monroe writes: "I have been favor'd with yours sometime since & delay'd an answer untill [ sic ] the issue of the business but as yet unfinished. I obtain'd the necessary certificates from Mr. Wood Ambler...& had yr. petition referr'd. It is yet before the committee. Be appeas'd I shall attend to it."-- MONROE, James. Engraved document signed ("James Monroe") as President, countersigned by Secretary of State JOHN QUINCY ADAMS ("John Quincy Adams") and Attorney General William Wirt, Washington, D.C., 6 March 1820. 2½ pages, folio, 14 5/8 x 11¼ inches, accomplished in manuscript , ON PARCHMENT, large paper seal of the U.S. with remains of pink ribbons, second page detached . A PATENT granted by President Monroe to Elijah Griffiths for his "improvement in Fire-Places." Together two items . Provenance: The personal collection of Herbert Gunnison (1858-1932), publisher of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle -- The present owners. (2)
