Four volumes (out of six) of the "London Polyglot", edited by Brian Walton. This is the fourth polyglot edition of the Bible and the New Testament, considered one of the most important polyglots. It was edited by Walton together with a team of scholars and is accompanied by various philological studies and translations of the bible into nine different languages, among them Samaritan, Persian, Ethiopian, Greek and Latin. A copy of this edition was owned by Isaac Newton and was used by him when he wrote his composition "Notes on the Jewish Temple". The first volume, with the Pentateuch, has eight engraved plates: illustrated title page, Walton's portrait, maps of Jerusalem and of Palestine (two printed on double pages), illustrations of the Temple and more. Volume no. 1: [14], 53,38,102 [i.e. 106] pp, [1] leaf, 865 pp + [8] plates. Volume no. 2: 889, [1], 29, [1] pp. Volume no. 4: 87 pp, [2] leaves, 20, 23,128, 159, 390 pp. Volume no. 6 (supplements): [1] leaf, 72, 56, 98 [i.e. 68], 80, 140, 24, 29-196, 24, 47, 47-58, 36, 36, 96 [i.e. 74], [2] pp. Approx 44 cm. Condition varies between the volumes. Stains, worming and tears. Ownership signatures. Newspaper clippings are mounted on the inner side of the front cover of volume no. 1. Contemporary leather bindings with gilt decorations, worn and torn, with lacking pieces to spines (some loose).
