NAPLES 1697 -- Pompe funerali Celebrate in Napoli per l'Eccellentissima Signora D. Caterina d'Aragona, e Sandovale. Naples: Giuseppe Roselli, 1697.
NAPLES 1697 -- Pompe funerali Celebrate in Napoli per l'Eccellentissima Signora D. Caterina d'Aragona, e Sandovale. Naples: Giuseppe Roselli, 1697. 2 o (328 x 218 mm). Engraved frontispiece, two folding plates and twelve engravings of emblems in the text (both plates with long repaired tears crossing image). (Repaired marginal tear on half-title and P1-R2, some browning and spotting.) Contemporary vellum over pasteboard. "The death of Medina Coeli's mother CATERINA D'ARAGONA provided a wonderful opportunity for the literati to prepare a volume to memorialize the event. For this occasion a folio volume, lavish even by baroque standards was prepared. It was over 250 pages and more than 80 individuals contributed to it... Among the participants were Giannelli, who had been arrested by the Inquisition... [GIAMBATTISTA] VICO wrote for this volume as did his former employer, Domenico Rocca, whose sons Vico had tutored..." (Harold Samuel Stone, Vico's Cultural History , p.91). Of particular note is the section of "Gregorii Messeri Emblemata". This is one of Vico's earliest appearances in print. Berlin 3236.
