Narbona Primero was a member of a Navajo delegation that was in Washington, D.C. from December 2, 1874 until ca Jan 14, 1875 when this portrait was taken. The Indians came with Ex-Governor W.F.M. Arny, the Indian Agent at Fort Defiance, New Mexico, to talk with the President about changing a strip of land in the northern part of their reservation for a tract of agricultural and pastoral land bordering their reservation on the south. They also wanted to address difficulties which grew out of the 1848 treaty, and to ask redress for the alleged murder of three of their tribe by Mormons who were trying to found a colony in Arizona.
