The hypersonic rocket-powered X-15, a Mach 6 follow up to the Bell X-2, would go on to make history, setting speed and altitude records, becoming the first aircraft to fly into outer space and being flown by pilots such as future astronauts Neil Armstrong and Joe Engle. The present model, made in North American's Columbus, OH model shop, includes tail number 66671, indicating that this is the second of the three X-15s, modified with a longer fuselage and the addition of two jettisonable external fuel tanks.
