one seated and three standing outside the British Legation in Berne, Switzerland, where their father, William Dougal Christie, was Chargé d'affaires from 1851 to 1854, watercolour heightened with body white, signed and dated 1852, centre right, 42.5 x 33cm (16 3/4 x 13 in). *** Provenance: by descent to the present owner. The diplomat William Christie (1816-1874) was married to Mary, the daughter of General James Grant. This family portrait is offered with a letter from Mrs Mary Grant, wife of James, to her granddaughter, the future novelist Mary Elizabeth Christie (1847-1906), referring to their residence in Berne and to her favourite toy rabbit depicted in her arms in this painting.
