Beschreibung:

Original drypoint etching tipped to heavy-stock paper backing leaf. 17x9.3 (6¾x7½"); sheet: 25.4x18 cm (10x7"). Printed by Henri Floury, Paris. One of 175 impressions in black from a total edition of 350. Initialed in plate. Published in 1926 in Maurice Joyant's Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec 1864-1901 Peintre: Dessins, Estampes, Affiches. In 1898 Lautrec made his only experimental prints using drypoint. His interest in attempting this medium was undoubtedly stimulated by his friends in the circle of the Nabis, many of whom were making experiments with intaglio printmaking techniques. No formal edition was made of the 9 drypoints in 1898, although it was probably pulled at the studio of Pierre Delatre. An edition of 25 had been pulled in 1911. Charles Maurin (1856–1914) was a French engraver and a friend of Toulouse-Lautrec—who had his first individual exhibition with him in 1893. Inspired by Japanese artists, he revolutionized the technique of etching. In 1891 he patented a method of color printing. In 1892, he exhibited at the Salon de la Rose + Croix. He contributed to La Revue Blanche, directed by Félix Fénéon, and Les Temps nouveaux, published by Jean Grave. One of his most notable works is a woodcut of the anarchist Ravachol in front of the guillotine.
