PALATINO, Giovanni Battista (c.1515-after 1575). Compendio del gran volume de l'arte del bene et leggiadramente scrivere tutte le sorti di lettere et caratteri . Rome: heirs of Valerio and Luigi Dorico, 1566. 4° (206 x 145mm). 64 leaves, the last blank. Author portrait on title verso, Palatino's address to the reader in italic type, 88 pages of writing samples, one full-page woodcut of writing instruments, woodcut of a candle and moth at end, historiated initials, double-rule around most pages. Early flexible vellum, title blindstamped on spine. Palatino was one of the great renaissance writing masters, combining calligraphic skill with philisophical-literary pretensions (cf. Morison). For the present edition he wrote a new preface and added new plates, notably that illustrating a 'cancellaresca Romana formata'. Bonacini 1340; Becker, Practice of Letters , 17; Sander 5392.
