Paul Henry RHA RUA (1876-1958) Grace O'Malley's Castle, Achill Sound Oil on canvas, 35.5 x 41cm (14 x 16'') Signed, inscribed with title verso and No. 4 verso Provenance: Private U.K. Collection The current owners grandfather attended the Dublin Horse Show annually between 1936 and 1939, and each year he marked the occasion by acquiring similar sized works by Paul Henry in Combridges. In December 2011 we sold The Roadside Cottage (Lot 14) for ?90,000 and this year we are delighted to offer two further works from this collection, the present lot and lot 46. Exhibited: Recent Paintings of Kerry and Wicklow by Paul Henry Combridge's Gallery, Dublin, from 12 November 1937 (19 or 25) Literature: S. B. Kennedy, Paul Henry with a catalogue of the Paintings, Drawings, Illustrations, Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 2007, p. 275, catalogue number 891. The view looks north east, from the southern part of Achill Island. The background mountain is Corraun Hill, which rises to a height of 540 metres. This may be Achill Sound, a composition that Henry exhibited in his 1937 Dublin exhibition. The artist painted a number of pictures of Grace O'Malley's Castle, which is strategically situated near the old coastguard station on Achill, where Paul and Grace Henry once lived. The modest use of impasto and overall light palette typify Henry's work of the mid and late 1930s. Dr S.B.
