Walt Whitman's personal copy of Gutekunst's 1880 portrait, used as frontispiece in the 1889 edition of Leaves of Grass. Horace Traubel, Whitman’s main disciple, has attested to Whitman’s ownership in his hand-written statement on the blank margin of the photogravure; Traubel has further inscribed the item to another person. The photograph was taken in 1880 in the studio of Frederic Gutekunst, and published in the 1889 pocket edition of Leaves of Grass. The present example is on fairly thick paper, and bears no evidence of ever having been bound in a book, so it may be presumed to have been a proof copy.
