PIERCE, FRANKLIN, President . Autograph letter signed in full, as Senator from New Hampshire, to Jonathan Harvey of Sutton Village, N.H.; Washington D.C., 15 December 1838. 1 1/2 pages, 4to, integral address leaf with panel in Pierce's hand, original circular postmark and PIERCE'S FREE FRANK: "Free Franklin Pierce," small stain on page 1. "THE PROSPECTS OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAVE RARELY BEEN SO CHARMING" A fine political letter from the young Senator, expressing his optimism for the Democratic Party in the forthcoming elections. "Your letter...in relation to the Post Office at No. London was received ...I believe the Postmaster General is satisfied, that nothing would be gained by a change there and things will consequently remain as they are. I am glad to perceive that our friends are beginning in season to prepare for the Spring election. It is true that Democracy is strong in N[ew] H[ampshire], but it is not the less important, that the organization and efforts of the opposition should be met by corresponding exertions on the part of our friends. I think the prospects of the democratic party have rarely been more charming. We have many great advantages over our opponents. Our friends in all parts of the Union are contending for the same great principles - perfectly united from one extreme of the Country to the other. Animated by common feelings and common interests - Not so with the opposition [the Whigs]. They can unite upon no great question of public policy - and have no common bond of union except hostility to the present administration [Martin Van Buren's]. Under such circumstances I entertain no fears for the result. We must triumph...."
