Payne and Son Date Published: 1777 Description: xxvii, 307 pp. One engraved plate. (8vo) 22.5x13.5 cm (9x5¼"), contemporary calf, spine stamped in gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers. First Edition. Second state, leaf C4 a cancel. Rowley was the literary creation of a very young Thomas Chatterton, writing in the guise of a 15th century monk. Chatterton took his life by poison at the age of only 17, despondent over his lack of literary good fortune. He became a heroic tragic figure in Romantic art.
