Provenance : Katerina Puchkova (gift inscription, dated May 1826, to:) -- Ange Hyacinthe Maxence, Baron of Damas (1785-1862). FIRST EDITION OF PUCHKOVA'S FIRST BOOK, INSCRIBED BY HER TO BARON DAMAS, Minister of War and Foreign Affairs. Puchkova, a friend of Anna Bunina, was an important figure in the literary origins of Russian women's emancipation. G.A. Tishkin has described Puchkova, Bunina, and Maria Izvekova 'as the first proto-feminist writers' (Rosslyn). Pervye Opyty , published in the year the Women's Patriotic Society was founded, discusses literature written by women, and the accomplishments of women in Russian society. 'Not until the late 1850s were women again to offer their views on literature so directly to the public' (Barker and Geith). Damas fought against Napoleon, most notably in 1812 at the Battle of Moscow, and at Borodino in the Semenovskoe Life Guards.
