Beschreibung:

Observations on the Act of Parliament Commonly Called the Boston Port-Bill with Thoughts on Civil Societies and Standing Armies .
Boston: Edes and Gill, 1774. Octavo (7 ¼ x 4 ½ inches, 180x115 mm). Modern calf-backed marbled paper boards. first edition of the best american response to the intolerable acts. Quincy’s Observations not only questioned the Intolerable Acts but also defended the Boston Tea Party and was among the earliest arguments proving independence to be inevitable. His work proved so persuasive that it prompted the Monthly Review to write: “[O]ur fellow-subjects there are as well read in the nature and grounds of civil and religious liberty, as ourselves; as appears by many of their late publications, in which they oppose British pretensions on British principles: and this shrewd commentary on the Boston Port Bill, will incline us to entertain a respectable opinion of their law pleaders.” Adams, American Independence 132a ; Church 1109; Evans 13561; Howes Q18; Sabin 67192.
