Un peu court de marges
La pièce fut représentée pour la première fois le 4 décembre 1665 par la troupe de Molière, au Palais-Royal. Racine, déçu par le jeu des acteurs et par l’insuccès, lui retira la pièce pour la faire jouer le 14 décembre en privé devant le Roi et les Grands par les comédiens de l’Hôtel de Bourgogne. Molière en fut d’autant aigri que la pièce fit un triomphe. Racine privilégiera désormais la troupe concurrente. Ce fut la rupture entre Molière et Racine.
