Beschreibung:

150 + [2] ad pp. With 15 wood-engraved plates; 20 engraved illustrations in the text (11 of them full-page); 1 facsimile in the text. 18.8x13 cm (7½x5"), original blindstamped pebbled cloth stamped in gilt on front cover & spine. First Edition. Presentation copy inscribed in pencil on the front free endpaper, "Compliments of the Author to Miss Lidia Mills." Rare pre-land rush publication promoting opportunities for settlers in Oklahoma. E.E. Dale, Range Cattle Industry, calls the work "valuable as a contemporary account of conditions in the Indian Territory and along the border but must be used with care because of its frankly controversial character." Jackson and Cole argue that Oklahoma Territory is public land and should be open to settlement. Written in the context of the conflicting interests of the railroads and cattle barons versus prospective settlers, with Jackson and Cole taking the side of the settlers. According to Howes, the map called for on the title page was not issued with all copies, and is often lacking. The present copy does not have the map. Herd 1140; Howes J3; Rader 2032; Graff 2174.
