(9 7/8 x 8 3/8 x 7/8 in.), dark purple levant morocco, covers with outer borders of onlaid black morocco gilt strapwork around an inner strapwork border of onlaid black morocco gilt, interwoven at top, bottom and sides of the panel, these broad borders filled with gilt sprays and leaf decorations in onlaid green morocco gilt within a gilt dotted ground, the centers each with a large recessed arabesque panel, the upper cover containing a large vari-colored morocco-onlaid design moulded in relief depicting a serpent entwined among the fruit-bearing leafy branches of the Tree of Life with skull among its roots, all on a gilt pointillé ground, the lower cover containing a large vari-colored morocco-onlaid design moulded in relief depicting a peacock among flowering tree branches with wings and tail feathers partially spread, all on a gilt-pointillé ground, spine in six compartments, gilt-lettered in one, a repeated gilt-decorated onlaid green morocco panel in the rest; board edges with double gilt-fillet, broad turn-ins with interlaced panels of inlaid black morocco gilt strapwork and filled with gilt-ruling incorporating heart-shaped devices; doublures with quatrefoil centerpiece of vari-colored morocco and incorporating floral ornaments all within a shaped oval of onlaid gray morocco, decorated with gilt stars and light-ray tools, free endpages of green watered silk, interleaved with white satin, g.e., stamp-signed by the binders on the upper turn-in, UPPER COVER DETACHED (but repairable), some splitting along lower joint, spine bands a little rubbed; full red morocco pull-off case.
