(Some faint spotting to a few leaves, last leaves with small marginal wormhole, 2F4 with marginal tear with early repair.) 19th-century red morocco gilt, edges stained red (extremities and joints rubbed, upper hinge cracked). Provenance : acquired from Lathrop C. Harper, 1965. FIRST EDITION of one of the most beautiful emblem books of the 16th-century, and one of the finest Italian books of the period illustrated with engravings. The work is divided into 3 parts, and dedicated to Philip II. Many great historical figures are treated textually as well as pictorially, including: Philip II, Charles V, Emperor Maximilian II, Catherine de Medici, Pope Clement IV, and John Frederick.
