SCHINKEL, Karl Friedrich (1781-1841). Sammlung Architektonischer Entwürfe . Potsdam: Ferdinand Riegel, 1852. Oblong 2° (410 x 505mm). 174 plates, 2 of which tinted lithographs. (Spotting throughout and occasionally heavy, repaired tear.) Contemporary sheep, strapwork pattern blocked in blind and gilt on the sides, upper side lettered in gilt, spine gilt in compartments, gilt turn-ins (spine and corners repaired, extremities rubbed, spine chipped affecting the lettering, gilt on spine mostly lost, front endpaper chipped and nearly detached). Provenance : Brooklyn Public Library (bookplate, perforated stamp and small ink stamp on the title and last leaf of text; sold Sotheby's, 30 April 1991, lot 537). New edition of this collection of designs by 'the most highly-regarded German architect of his generation' (RIBA). These include Schinkel's plans for his Schauspielhaus in Berlin, his chapel in the gardens of Peterhof in St. Petersburg, the summer villa at Charlottenhof, and his pioneering Bauakademie in Berlin. The Sammlung was first published in 28 parts between 1819 and 1840 and very popular throughout the 19th century when it was often reprinted.
