Italien Mitte 17. Jh. Holz, vollrund geschnitzt, polychrom gefasst und partiell vergoldet. Stehendes Paar auf Plattsockeln in kostbaren Gewändern mit ausgestellten Ärmeln, die Arme weit ausgebreitet und beide einen hohen Hut mit breiter, aufgestellter Krempe tragend. Altersspuren, Fassung überarbeitet. Hut der Dame mit fehlender Spitze. Plattsockel später erg.

Einige Entwürfe für asiatische Porzellanfiguren, so auch jene von Friedrich Elias Meyer für Meissen, weisen deutliche Ähnlichkeiten mit den hier präsentierten Darstellungen auf. Besonders «Malabarin» und «Malabar» um 1751/55 entstanden, lassen eine offensichtliche Orientierung an diesen Figuren erkennen.
Die «Chinesenmode» erfasste im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert die meisten europäischen Fürstenhöfe und führte dazu, dass alle bedeutenden Porzellanmanufakturen chinesische Motive, Formen und asiatisch anmutende Figuren produzierten.

Rare pair of Asians. Italy mid 17th C. Carved wood, painted in polychrome colours and partially gilt. Standing couple on a flat plinth in precious robes with flared sleeves, arms outstretched and both wearing a high hat with a broad, erect brim. Signs of age, repainted. Lady’s hat with lost tip. Base later.

Some of the Asiatic porcelain figurine models by Friedrich Elias Meyer designed for Meissen circa 1751/55, especially «Malabarin (Malabar woman)» and «Malabar (malabar man)», are showing a strong reference to the presented figures.
In the 17th and 18th Century, the fashion of Chinoiserie reached almost all European courts and in consequence, all important European manufactures produced porcelain in Chinese motifs, shapes and Asian-appearing figures.
