Bernard Shaw" and "GBS"), 12 pp, various sizes, Haslemere, London and Keswick, December 7, 1898 to January 7, 1922 to James Douglas On music, journalism ("Your suggestion of 'Was Hamlet Fat or Thin?' quite stiffens me with indignation"), America ("The reason I do not go ... is that I am afraid of being arrested ... No European author of any distinction is safe in the United States""), prostitution, WWI and the absurdity of pitying civilian victims over military ones ("a torpedo in the saloon of an expensive liner: are you quite sure you see nothing amusing in that?"), poetry, and George Washington. 2. BEERBOHM, MAX. 5 Autograph Letters Signed ("Max Beerbohm," "Max"), 14 pp, mostly 12mo, London, [c 1907], to James Douglas On caricature, his plays, and his fees for theater reports. 3. LANG, ANDREW. Autograph Letter Signed ("The Father of Twelve Fairies and one Birdman") together with a draft for the same, each 1 p, 4to and folio, November 12, 1917, to a certain Carmenetta, discussing his various "Fairies" (i.e. Fairy Books) in lively terms: "I have Twelve Fairies: they live inside each other ... If you wish to see Fairy Number 12, peep into your mirror, at twenty minutes to or past, with your eyes shut, & then open them very quickly. If you open your eyes quickly enough you will catch my Fairy (1917 Edition) with her eyes shut." The remainder including a bold WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST signature on Savoy Hotel stationery, but chiefly being papers of James Douglas a photograph, typed manuscript memoirs, letter from his predecessor as editor of The Star appointing him assistant editor, genealogical research, etc. A few letters with punch-holes and light soiling, most with folds, some original envelopes.
