Provenance : George Gordon Massey (bookplate) -- purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York, 17 April 1969. FIRST EDITION of a poem that enjoyed immense vogue in the great century of fox-hunting. Johnson regarded Somervile's two opening lines -- "The Chace I sing, Hounds, and their various Breed,/And no less various Use" -- as "a bad specimen of his blank verse." Nevertheless, even Johnson conceded that "To this poem praise cannot be totally denied. He is allowed by sportsmen to write with great intelligence of his subject ... he has with great propriety enlarged his plan by the modes of hunting used in other countries." 750 copies were printed.
