AN ARCHIVE OF EGERTON’S NAVAL PAPERS AS COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE STATION, MOSTLY CONCERNING PREPARATIONS FOR POSSIBLE WAR AGAINST GERMANY, ESPECIALLY SOUTH AFRICAN STRATEGY WITH REGARD TO GERMAN SOUTH-WEST AFRICA comprising memoranda and correspondence with the Admiralty, officers under his command, and South African officials, a mixture of letters received and retained copies, with letters signed by Admiral Fisher (2), Walter Hely-Hutchinson (9), P.S. Methuen (2), and the Earl of Selborne (2), including Egerton’s proposals for an offensive war against German South West Africa, other proposals for a defensive war and warning of possible attack on Cape Colony from the German colony, the security of undersea telegraph cables, the vulnerability of German East Africa, the likely disruption of the gold mining industry in the event of war, warnings of German military activity and interest in the region, also a series of papers relating to Egerton’s official visit to Argentina for the centenary of the May Revolution (May 1910), Egerton’s letter of appointment, 1908, and letters of thanks at the end of his posting 1910-11; manuscript and typescript, including some carbon copies, some items with “Confidential” and “Secret” stamps, altogether in excess of 200 pages in seven files, 24 July 1908 to 1 February 1911 (but mostly 1909); together with a later journal and sketchbook by Egerton, 1925-28; the collection housed in Egerton’s official black satchel briefcase
