Beschreibung:

De Waereld is een Speel Toneel.
Holland: 1720. Copper engraving on laid paper. Sheet size: 19 1/2 x 15 1/4 in. Condition: trimmed to plate mark, slightly toned, light foxing to edges, minor repairs on verso. the mississippi bubble and the first stock market collapse - the devil leads investors waving their shares in the air Originally published in Het groote tafereel der dwaasheid [The Great Picture of Folly], this satirical work takes aim at the financial chaos brought on by the wild speculation of the European stock markets in the Mississippi Company. Started by Scottish financier John Law, who was granted a portion of Louisiana in 1717, his company sought to develop the natural resources of the region in a plan known as the "Mississippi Scheme." Shares were issued on the Durch exchange at 500 guilders and amid wild speculation eventually climbed to 18,000. Amid such feverish speculation investors sought to take their profit before a single resource had been exported from Louisiana, causing a run on the fund and its subsequent collapse. The Netherlands lost 350 million guilders invested before the collapse. A rare print of unfortunately continuing relevance.
