Stuart (James, & Revett, Nicholas). The Antiquities of Athens, measured and delineated by James Stuart F. R. S. and F. S. A. and Nicholas Revett painters and architects, edited by William Kinnard, 4 volumes, new (i.e. 2nd) edition, London: Priestley & Weale, 1825-30, half-titles volumes 1-3, 191 engraved plates and plans, titles with engraved vignettes, engraved head-pieces, bound without the engraved portraits of Stuart and Revett, occasional minor marks to margins (generally in clean condition), later ownership inscription to front endpaper of William Smith Durham University, School of Architecture, dated 1938, contemporary maroon half morocco, rubbed and scuffed with joints cracked and several covers detached, folio (Quantity: 4) Provenance: Sir William Whitfield CBE (1920-2019), one of the most significant British architects of the second half of the 20th century, notable for his ground-breaking designs for major public projects including Glasgow University Library, the Hunterian Art Gallery (1960-1968), Richmond House in Whitehall (1982-1984), recently selected as one of London’s ten most iconic Postmodern Buildings, Hereford Cathedral’s Mappa Mundi Library (1996), and Hawksmoor’s Baroque masterpiece Christ Church Spitalfields, slowly and carefully restored over three decades from 1970 to 2000 under his direction. He was Surveyor of the Fabric of St Paul’s Cathedral between 1985 and 1990. Fowler 340; Lowndes 2536. Second edition of this major survey, first published between 1762 and 1816. 'A work of surprising exactness presenting to the eye in one group, a collection of the noblest specimens of Grecian Art and Attic tastes now existing. This is a new edition of volume I., II., and III. of the original work, with considerable additions, likewise a fourth volume of new matter' (Lowndes). The fourth volume bears the title Antiquities of Athens and other places in Greece, Sicily, etc., supplementary to the antiquities of Athens by James Stuart and Nicholas Revett delineated and illustrated by C. R. Cockerell, W. Kinard, T. L. Donaldson, W. Jenkins, W. Railton, architects.
