Hugo Grotius or De Groot, a lawyer by training, devoted his life to the pursuit of peace, and this work was the culmination of his efforts. Printing and the Mind of Man describes it as "the first attempt to lay down a principle of right, and a basis for society and government, outside Church or Scripture... Grotius's principle of an immutable law, which God can no more alter than a mathematical axiom, was the first expression of the `droit naturel', the natural law which excercised the great political theorists of the eighteenth century, and is the foundation of modern international law." PMM 125. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine scuffed, ends worn; lacking a leaf from the first gathering, likely the half-title, and both leaves of the final gathering, the first of which was the final index leaf, the second a blank; title page soiled and stained, chipped around edges with loss but not affecting text, laid on backing leaf, wear and marginal repairs to following leaves and to a few leaves within; most of the contents are very good or better, with just occasional light foxing.
