"The Sealed Coffin," with art by John Celardo, reads like an ersatz Shock SuspenStories "preachie," complete with taboo-busting racial scenarios and thinly-veiled sexual situations. A Hollywood couple, Myra and Jeff, are driving through Africa and run over and kill a black child. They offer the child's family cash and make rude remarks ("Five hundred dollars... should satisfy them! A human life means nothing to these savages!"). In a twist that may have had unsettling implications for readers back when miscegenation laws were still beng enforced, an African native, naked except for a loincloth, sneaks into sexy blonde Myra's bedroom in the dead of night and "pricks" her with his "potion," causing her to swell up until, nine months later, the unthinkable takes place. All the signifiers are in place for Myra to be knocked up with a black man's baby, but instead, it turns out she's merely got a fatal case of acromegaly ('50s readers: "Whew!").
