Large handcoloured engraved map on 4 sheets, joined, elaborate figural title cartouche of a native American family group, additional scale cartouche, inset maps of Baffin & Hudson's Bay and California (a few short tears without loss, part of right hand and lower edge torn away with slight loss to engraved frame, lower right hand corner torn and inconspicuously repaired on verso, a few other repairs on verso, a few light stains), 1150 x 1170mm. RARE. Based on Bowen & Gibson's 1755 map, Sayer and Bennett's Peace of Paris map details the provisions of the treaty which ended the French and Indian war. Several articles of the treaty are engraved in the map's blank ocean areas. An interesting note to the inset map of California states "The Passage by Land to California, Discover'd by Father Eusebius Francis Kino a Jesuit, between the Years 1698 and 1701, before which, and for a Considerable Time Since California has always been described in all Charts and Maps as an Island" (although the map clearly features an extensive "Sea of California"). Phillips p. 589; Tooley The Mapping of America 49(f): "The eastern boundary of the Province of New York has been moved from the eastern shores of Lake Champlain and now runs along the Connecticutt River . The title of N. Carolina has been inserted in two lines."
