On the Brain, the Eye, and the Ear Author: Monro, Alexander (secundus) Place: Edinburgh Publisher: Bell & Bradfute Date: 1797 Description: 263 pp. 24 engraved plates, some folding, one partially hand-colored (one plate bound upside down). (Folio) 33x24.5 cm (13x9½"), modern full speckled calf, red morocco label lettered in gilt. First Edition. Separate title pages, with the imprint Adam Neill and Company, 1797, for each of the three parts: “Observations on the communication of the ventricles of the brain with each other”; “Observations on the structure and function of the eyes”; and “Observations on the organ of hearing in man and other animals.” Alexander secundus is generally acknowledged to be the greatest of the three Monros. Norman Library 1539. Wellcome IV, p. 156. Blake, p. 309. With the signature of William Ryland, Edinburgh, dated 1819 on the title. Lot Amendments Condition: First two leaves moderately browned, with occasional light toning throughout, margins of title expertly mended; some offsetting from plates; very good in a fine modern binding.
