Sefer Tzemach Tzedek – Halachic rulings, Parts 1-2. By Rebbe R' Menachem Mendel. Brought to print by his grandsons [the Rebbes of Kapust]. Vilna, 1884. Part One: on Orach Chaim and Yorah De'ah. Part Two: on Even HaEzer, Choshen Mishpat, and anthologies. 7 [rare] pages are added at the beginning of Part One, with corrections and additions [for both parts]. One page 138 of Part Two, the Tzemach Tzedek writes about a proof cited by the Vilna Ga'on for a certain matter: "I, in my meekness, did not merit to understand his holy words". That a Rebbe of Chabad – a movement which the Vilna Ga'on vehemently opposed, could write such a sentence, is a beautiful example of humility, nobility and love of truth. In the 1949 edition, printed by Kehat Publishing, this sentence was replaced by the words "this is no proof". This matter aroused a great argument. Rabbi Yitzchak Hutner wrote a letter of protest to the printers of the book, and they answered that the first version was a forgery – see about this in Yeshurun collection, Volume 20, 2008, pages 790-793. It was discovered that after the book was printed, someone else printed an additional leaf with this change / correction / forgery – reading "this is no proof", and pasted it in some of the copies! The copy before us is that rare copy which the author of the essay in Yeshurun had. He wrote (page 792): "I searched in many large libraries in the world, and among private collectors, and did not find a "fixed" version of the Vilna copy, but rather, all had the original wording. Also in the Chabad library in NY, there is probably not a fixed version… recently… I found a single פולמוסcopy…" see more about this rare finding in the Kfar Chabad weekly, issues 1261, 1262, 1271 - 2008. We do not know of another "fixed" copy other than this one. [2 title pages], [7 pages], 286 leaves; [4], 100; 140 pages. 22.5 cm. Good-fair condition, moth holes. Colorful edging. Old and worn binding, with moth holes.
