.58 RF caliber, 37.75" barrel retained by three flat, spring-retained barrel bands, no S/N. Tinned finish, smooth walnut stock. Lock marked U.S./SPRINGFIELD and with eagle, dated 1865 at tail. No barrel proofs, script ESA in an oval cartouche on counterpane as well as a script SWP in a rectangle with rounded corners. Rack number 395 C.8 stamped in reverse of butt. Model 1864 pattern rear sight, M1863 pattern ramrod/cleaning rod, sling swivels. Only 5,000 M1865 "1st Allin" Conversion rifles were produced circa 1865, using most of the components from surplus US .58 caliber Rifle Muskets. Standard finish was bright with a case hardened breech and a blued rear sight, but this example is fully plated in tin that appears to be a period applied finish. Whether this was an experimental finish or was applied at a later date after the gun was sold for surplus is unclear, but the finish certainly appears to be from the period of use. A scarce gun in any collection of breech loading US martial arms. Condition: Very good. Retains most of the applied tin finish with some flaking and wear, showing oxidation where the finish has worn. Mechanically functional, clear markings, very good bore. Stock with scattered bumps and dings, showing light to moderate use and wear.
